For the record, this guy is more in front of the liqour store next door than in front of the Red Baron.
I wasted SO MUCH TIME looking for him around the Red Baron, I would drive around the outside perimeter on McKee and U-turn back onto the freeway, disappointed, until one pandafied day, my boyfriend told me to park and we'd go look for him on foot. Well, I gave up after going to the front entrance of the Red Baron, but he went a little further and found him for me.
So yeah, DELICIOUS. Especially on a Saturday night doing the randomness things in San Jose. It brings me back to those warm fuzzy days of being saved by a bacon wrapped hot dog in LA.
Yeah, those were the days.
Quick tip - he's there later in the evening. Cheap delicious hot dogs wrapped in bacon. There's not much more I can say - it's a hot dog. But these are some of the best you can find in San Jose. The location is a little shady - but amongst friends, it's fine.
We couldn't wait for our meeting with the Mexican Hot Dog Man, and he didn't disapoint. The toppings, bacon, and bun were great, but the hot dog was pretty small for $3.
We would have given it a full 5 starts, but there was a ghetto lady trying to sell me fake DVD's out of a baby stroller. The adventures of Hulk isn't even a real movie! Hahaha. How i love the Eastside.
Good and only $3! Hot dog wrapped in bacon on a warmed bun topped with grilled onions, jalapenos, mayonaise, mustard and ketchup.
What else do you need to know?
Oh yeah, careful cause the Red Baron is like Thunderdome, "two men enter, one man leaves" type of joint.
Just stay drama free, hang out in the well lighted convenience store if you need to. Be careful when you back out of the parking lot cause there are tons of people who won't move. Just smile and wait, or maybe get a drink at the convenience store.
Mexican Hot Dog Man is amazing! Tell me where else in San Jose can you find $3 bacon-wrapped dogs, packed with onions and peppers and mayonaise magic. This could've been a 5, but his choice of locale (doing business in front of a sketchy cantina that's next to a sketchy liquor store with tranny prostitutes lurking backing and forth), makes this a 4.
Pretty damn good hot dog!! $3 is well worth it!!
Good Stuff!
I always get mine with no bacon (not a big pig eater) but I must say they have a taste like no other...I tried making them at home and it's just not the same..
The same guy has another stand on the corner of Kollmar and Story Rd in front of the liquor store; another ghetto spot, but I have come to realize that all the good eats are in the ghetto!
Yeah. I'm a fan. I can't help it if I'm a cheap date! 3 dollars will yield a crispy bacon wrapped hot dog crisped on a propane-powered cart with at least 4 condiments to mush everything together- heaven balanced between 2 buns. Who wouldn't want a piece of this!
Nevermind that you will be standing in front of a liquor store and adjacent to el baron rojo. Nevermind that occasionally everyone including security will run out of the bar and around the corner presumably to chase a fight down the alley. East side lovin is east side lovin. bring a friend if you must so you can speak of bacon wrapped goodness (it'll look funny, even to us east siders, if you start talkin to yourself)
Only tear is that he closes shop at 1am so the clubbing/bar-hopping patrons in dtsj will miss him. yeah. it's a sad experience racing from downtown to see him nowhere in sight. don't bother trying! the sadness will just hurt too much..
Driving home one day with the BF and a friend, we finally spotted the Mexican Hot Dog Man posting it in front of the liquor store next door to the Red Baron, and immediately busted a U to turn into the parking lot.
It's a steamed hot dog, wrapped in partially cooked bacon, which is then finished off on the grill to crisp up a bit. He puts it into a standard bun (which he warms quickly on the grill), and tops it with grilled onions and green bell peppers (or was that jalapeno?) with a drizzle of ketchup and mayo and mustard. I was a little disappointed that the hot dog itself was not deep-fried... boooo.
The combination of all the ingredients worked together and hit the spot for a hot dog craving. Not the best quality hot dog so I can't give it a full 5 stars... but for a hot dog cart on the street, this definitely deserves 4 stars for the creativity.
Such a great find in East San Jose. Many thanks, Angelo.
$3 dollars for a mouthful of heavenly-ness.
Try it, you really can't regret it.
The Mexican Hot Dog Man with his broken English told me he works from 6pm to Midnight 7 days a week.
I can't wait to go back and be the first to take a picture.
